A new cereal bar is to be created with two key ingrediants, peanut butter and oats. The bars are to have 31 grams of carbohydrates and 23 grams of protein. Using this table: Peanut butter = 2 carbohydrates and 6 grams of protein, Oats = 5 carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein; create a system of two equations and two unknowns to find how many tablespoons of each ingrediant are needed. Solve the system of equations using matrices. Show all work. A. Write an equation for the total amount of carbohydrates. B. Write an equation for the total amount of protein. C. Determine the augmented matrix that represents the equations from A and B. D. Solve for the matrix. Show all work. E. How many tablespoons of each is needed?

Hi there!

Here you go:

x = peanut butter, y = oats

A. Write an equation for the total amount of carbohydrates.
2x + 5y = 31

B. Write an equation for the total amount of protein.
6x + y = 23

C. Determine the augmented matrix that represents the equations from A and B.
Write out just the coefficients:
2 5 31
6 1 23

D. Solve for the matrix. Show all work.
Subtract 3 times the first line from the second line...
3 times the first line = 2*3 5*3 31*3 = 6 15 93
Subtract that:
2 5 31
0 -14 -70

Divide the second line by -14:
2 5 31
0 1 5

Subtract 5 times the second row from the first one...
5 times the second one = 0*5 1*5 5*5 = 0 5 25
Do the subtraction:
2 0 6
0 1 5

Divide the first row by 2:
1 0 3
0 1 5

E. How many tablespoons of each is needed?
You need 3 tablespoons of peanut butter.
You need 5 tablespoons of oats.
